I believe they bought a 2 or 5 yr maintenance contract which covered all 
upgrades and updates. Cost was much less than exchange/av/antispam by a few 
grand. They were using sendmail at the time and it kept getting hacked. They 
saved enough where they could upgrade their firewall as well.
