I am totally comfortable with Scripting around this.

More info:

Currently 2 boxes, both 2003, 1 MySQL, 1 MS SQL. (I am comfortable
backing up up the flattened DB backups, no DB aware agent needed).
Someday I might throw an Exchange Mailbox server in this rack.

You can do a lot with NTBackup and some scripting, if you don't have
any other options. Relatively easy to setup e-mailed reports of backup
jobs to go to different distribution lists, etc.... And there are a
number of examples of scripts like this out on the net if you are
interested. As others have already pointed out, more details are needed
regarding your specific environment (i.e. Exchange, SQL, Oracle,
etc...).

In a small rack, 2 servers, will ntbackup to an external raided disk(s)
suffice? I have never really used ntbackup, all my deployments have
been at a much larger scale requiring a central service like BackupExec.

BackupExec can restore ntbackup files... seems like a good setup to me.

But there has to be some gotchas... I would have to monitor more
closely, create my own reporting tool,

Any others?
