I would strongly advise against using 3rd party hard drives. The HP branded drives have predictive failure logic, and can be monitored by the HP server agents.
As far as raid, it depends on which controller you order it with. The base model only includes a SATA controller, no RAID. The other option is the Smart Array P212 which supports RAID 0/1/1+0/5/5+0.
