Classification: UNCLASSIFIED Caveats: NONE My daughter (college student) had a similar problem with her laptop, but it was Anti Virus Plus
It basically hosed the computer, popups all over the place, Mcafee was disabled, couldn't install Malware Bytes, couldn't run regedit, etc. I ran VipreRescue which cleaned out most of the crap. However between the fake anti-virus program and the VipreRescue it introduced a new problem. As soon as I logged in (with any account) the system would log me off. The problem is explained in the following link and basically was a problem with the winlogon key in the registry. http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Windows-XP-Logs-Then-Immediately-Logs-Off -t15771.html I used the linux boot disk "Offline NT Password & Registry Editor" to edit the registry and insert the proper value into the userinit valuename I rebooted and baba-bing things were normal again I was able to install MalwareBytes and run it. I ran CCcleaner I ran Runscanner Larry From: Vicky Spelshaus [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, December 03, 2009 4:28 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Re: ANTI VIRUS PRO 2010 I've found a combination of Vipre Rescue and then Malwarebytes will clean it. And trust me, I've had plenty of practice lately as cleaning this off campus computers seems to be all we are doing lately. One other point, it only affected the user profile. When I logged in as an administrator, there were no problems at all, and everything acted normally.
