500mb ??? wow, those are whoppers ! IIRC, the first drives we had in our original SystemPro ( 386/33 ) were the Connor 210mb drives, eight of them.

I think that's stretching it a bit ... but to have the drive firmware closely *matched* to the drive controller to ensure proper operation and compatibility with different OS drivers is a big plus from my experience. I like knowing that all drives in an array will behave exactly the same way each time to a commoand from the controller. And I may have been one of the lucky ones, but going all the way back to the old Compaq SystemPro array controller , I've found the SMART array controllers from Compaq/HP as better than decent, compared to problems I've had with generic and older Dell PERCs.
