Mine is Standalone, and when I created it, I used a Domain Admin account. I'd guess that they need the AD rights.

They are claiming its asking them for Active Directory permissions accordingly. Any hints on what might be the hang-up. Sorry a DFS noob here, don't use the stuff that much therefore not sure what his issue might be. But I am not going to extend my AD schema with Win2k8 objects just to get his DFS root running if that is what its going to take.
