He would have said such a thing, especially to Lady Astor, who is the
supposed other party in this exchange, though there's no evidence for
it, so it probably is apocryphal. My other favorite exchange between
them is supposed to have gone something like:
Lady Astor: If you were my husband, I would poison your drink.
Winston: If you were my wife, madam, I would drink it.
Also no verification for this exchange, but very much in the spirit of
the bitter feelings between them.
