Subject: Powershell return values

Been searching the net and found a slew of info but I'm still not sure:/

If I write a function that generates output as it runs a console program how
can I correctly return a value based on an event I test so that I can later
call the function in an If statement like so:

If (!(function_name)) {do something...}

I would assume this would start the function and evaluate its return...

Thanks!
