Short answer is yes. R2 was supposed to add the ability to backup (image backup I believe) just selected items that was missing from 2008.
Used it in my previous position and was able to get 1 TB backed up (all virtual machines that were online) in less than 8 hours. Restore would have been fun as all it would have needed was a working 2008 AS working server that supported VT technology.
