Yes there are differences.

 

There is an adprep32.exe on the installation media to "work around" this
issue.

32-bit media.  

Ok, go to TechNet to download the 32-bit media, and I as though, there
isn't one.  Well, there is, but it's not R2.

 

Any schema differences in the between 2008 R2 and vanilla 2008?
