He added it to the domain. When it rebooted, and complained about a
duplicate name, he then went into AD and renamed the computer account
there (I believe - I'll have to go ask him later).

The SIDs of the domain account was different than the SID of the new
physical machine he had configured, so I couldn't just rename it. Nor
could I DCPROMO it back down to a member server, since it had no
domain membership, under the SID of the new machine.
