Are you asking if it's good enough to monitor the event log instead of the state of a service? Personally I would say no. It's possible that the messages wont' get to the event log for a number of reasons, or that the event log can become corrupt. It's much more reliable to query the service directly.
Are you asking for a recommendation on a monitoring product? If so what is the size of the environment? Heterogeneous? Budget?
