Depends on what workload is being put on them also, I would look at a
representative set of workstations (5) or less. And see what
applications they are using during the day. Sometimes slowness, is the
user not being able to hit ebay as fast as they would like, and that
shouldn't be your problem when they are using a site like that for
non-bussiness related items.

Other issues: ( Memory pressure, processor pressure, Application
streaming? (Big bandwidth hogs out there) (RSS, Music Sites, etc etc)

Malware/Spyware/Rootkits (Always unpleasant but you need to check)

Misconfigured AV (real time scanners can cause issues and slow downs)

Performance monitor a few representative systems, day to day and see if
these machines go below the following thresholds.

Processor: Less than 30% free for longer than 5 mins continous

Memory: Less than 512MB of RAM

Processor Queue Length: greater than 2 for more than 5 mins.

Disk: %Disk time : Greater than 70% for more than 5 mins

DISK: Avg Disk Read/Sec, Avg Disk Write/Sec, %Disk read time, %Disk
write time.

That should get you started,

Subject: SPEEDING UP WORKSTATIONS

>From time to time, staff members complain that their workstations seem
to be running slower. Many times, something as simple as defragmentation
results in improvement, but not always. And of course I try to determine
if the slowness is accessing the internet, or just accessing files on
our servers. We're working on those issues. What concerns me is that as
I move around doing updates from time to time, is the fact that while
all our workstations are virtually identical configurations, they all do
not seem to move equally fast when I do an upgrade locally. This is a
small shop, so I am able to remember that it seems that it's usually the
same machines that seem to move slower than others, and some even much
faster than others when running local updates. Does anyone know of some
software that might help me to determine what if any "issues" are
slowing down certain machines? If anyone has suggestions as to possible
causes and fixes, I'd sure like to have them.
