I am bit confused what did you mean by nested array? A array on top of an array??

Depends on how many discs you want to buy, how many slots you have etc. Honestly, drives are getting bigger more often than speed is getting higher and HBAs getting faster. More storage isn't always equated to simply using bigger discs w/ the old implementations.
