I think you need to tweak a display specifier to make it percolate up. Been a while though - don't remember precisely.

Showing my AD inexperience here...we're trying to leverage the employeeType attribute in Active Directory. We've enabled it being replicated to the GC but still do not see it in the ADUC snap-in (we enabled it to be viewed there as well). Really what we can't see it is for a 3rd party AD application rDirectory, the real reason we enabled it). Don't GC's update every 8 hours, and we made this change yesterday. What am I overlooking?
