Another difference I found between the APC Back-Ups and Smart-Ups is that with the Back-ups if you have a prolonged power outage and the battery runs out, when the power comes back it doesn't supply power to the attached devices until you power the UPS back on manually. With the Smart-Ups as soon as power is restored your devices are powered up also. At least that has been my experience with them.
