Another difference I found between the APC Back-Ups and Smart-Ups is that with 
the Back-ups if you have a prolonged power outage and the battery runs out, 
when the power comes back it doesn't supply power to the attached devices until 
you power the UPS back on manually.  With the Smart-Ups as soon as power is 
restored your devices are powered up also.  At least that has been my 
experience with them.

One big difference - if you are on an emergency generator, the cheaper units 
may not like your generator power! 

My "SmartUPS" let me adjust the sensitivity so they accept generator power and 
go back on-line.  The cheap desktop UPSs just keep beeping until someone kills 
them.
