We used to/still do use a similar naming convention, ie: claims_8000_038,
which was department, model and last octet of the IP.
This was fine when there was one dept per section, all the printers were
HPs, and all printers were on 10.x.12 ip range.

Since then, multiple departments use the same section, each section has a
separate IP subnet, we now have HPs, Canons and Oces.
We've recently started naming them by location, building, section & model.

Claims_8000_038 which was an HP 8000 in Claims with an IP address of
10.2.12.38 has now been replaced with an Oce VarioPrint 2050 in a
multi-department secion with a different IP subnet.

Under the new naming convention it is Cvn_QFS_1stRight_VP2050 meaning
Cavan Site, QFS Building, 1st Floor RHS, and it's a VarioPrint 2050.
Due to the size of the sections, it's highly unlikely that there are going
to be 2 2050's in the same section. If another network re-structure takes
place, the queue is unaffected by the IP change.

Lower queue maintenance in the long term, but the big issue is getting
2500 users onto the new queues, hence the script I'm working on posted
previously.

May not suit everyone, and somebody probably has a better solution, but
it's the only one workable for us in the meantime.

Re: Printer managment

Don't know about "large" orgs, but my approach would be to

1) Set up new print queues with the names you want, pointing to the
machines at their current IP addresses. Don't delete the old queues
yet.

2) Get everybody switched over to the new print queues.

3) Set up DHCP reservations for the MACs of the printers.

4) Switch the printers to DHCP and reboot them, or just change their
addresses to static equivalents of the of the reservations and at the
same time update the print queues to the new addresses.

5) Delete the old print queues.

BTW - I name print queues according to a definite format:
DepartmentName-PrinterModel-JackNumber-LastTwoOctetsOfIPAddress - this
yields a name such as Finance-Dell1300n-S138-1248.
