  The virtual hardware that VMware presents to the guest OS has a
version.  New VMware releases add new features to the virtual
hardware, but those features may be incompatible vs the old hardware,
so you can control the version of the virtual hardware platform which
gets presented to the guest OS.

  Kind of like upgrading your video card but keeping the same brand.
Might still need to change drivers or software config.
