If you're using the "Disk Cleanup" app baked into XP/2003 and earlier, and it takes forever at "Scanning: Compress old files", delete the registry key at "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Co mpress old files". In the future Disk Cleanup will skip the compression option completely and move straight to what you were looking for all along.
