This doesn't really answer your question, but: I looked at it briefly when we got some Phaser 6280's recently. The download package was around 40 MB, while the printer-specific package was like 3 MB, so we with printer specific. The Phaser 6280 printer-specific driver works well. We just got a Xerox WorkCentre 5755, too.
