In a past life, at two unrelated customer sites, I saw them used to cool very small (approx 4 x 8) computer closets. They ain't efficient but they do work. In both cases they were vented directly through the adjacent wall so duct run was a non-issue. The customers didn't have trouble with premature failure; maybe they just got lucky. Certainly they're far from ideal.
