It is not just activation. There is also a bug in Win 7 with this. Well
documented from day one on the RC's and Beta's. This issue is a nightmare, and
we may hold back deploying Win 7 because of it. I cannot believe it is still
there after all the problems it caused with the RC's. The shell fixes, the
hotpatch from MS and all the other ideas don't work.

For us it shows up because we do not allow students to alter the wallpaper or
background via GPO. So when they as a new unprivileged user log in they get the
black screen.

The only fix is to go back to the old fashioned way of setting up the desktop
with a local admin account, reboot then copy that user profile over to the
default user. Set it up with no wallpaper and a solid color and you will be ok.
Unsupported, MS specifically says you shouldn't do it but it works and we have
not seen any ill effects. Sysprep with copyprofile does not do it, that is
broken too and it misses that setting along with a bunch of others.

Subject: Windows 7 Black Screen

We are currently setting up multiple labs with a Windows 7 image, and after
working out most of the bugs, we're currently stuck with an issue with the
black screen that seems to plague a lot of Windows 7 users. When we log in,
with or without a privledged user, the background images is removed and there's
just a black background with the rest of the OS loaded fine.

We have tried the shell fix by Previx, which ended up blowing away our
dontdisplaylastusername group policy (don't ask me how it superceded it...still
can't figure it out), which we had to reset on each machine. After hacking it
and trying all sorts of fixes, we decided to reimage the machines. Which,
still leaves the issue unresolved.

Out of 20 computers, only 6 of them did not have a black screen after being
reimaged, all with the exact same hardware, image, etc.

Has anyone found a fix to the black screen?

Thank you.

Scott
