I agree, 512MB of RAM is pretty light, especially to do the kind of real-time background indexing that Windows Desktop Search wants to do, as you're now discovering by rebuilding the index.
That said, rebuilding the index is likely to resolve the problem, at least in the short-term. Ben M.
