So far, Picasa seems to be what I needed.

Picasa is super easy to use.  It does facial recognition/matching, which opens 
up a whole new world of automatically sorting photos.

But, as far as categorization being based off of meta data, well, no.  But you 
can tag the crap out of your pictures.
