Well disabling IPv6 and then, strangely, re-enabling it allowed the server to start responding to pings....however, I now can't log on to it because of the old "trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed" error. As luck would have it, just when I thought I was getting somewhere, it turns out no-one has any idea what the local username and password would be for this system...so it looks like I'm going to have to nuke it from orbit.
Thanks for the help!
