I have a HP Windows Home Server. It 'just works'. It does nightly imaged
based backups of my families computers. It has saved me from some data lose
when my wife accidentally deleted some pictures, we were able to find and
restore them from the image based backups. We centralized my music and
movie collection. As my DVD player is a DLNA device I am able to stream
media from it. It notifies me when one of the systems is not updating AV
definitions as well. It consumes low power and in general just sits there
and works. I don't exploit half the features and am more then happy I got
it.

I am looking forward to getting the VAIL based one when it comes out.

I would not put any VMs on it, but I got an HP Pavillion desktop, stuck 8GB
of ram in it and loaded up a HyperV instance with 3 additional 300GB drives
for my home lab. That will run 4-6 guest systems which is generally enough
for what I am learning at any given time.
