In the OP's context, "They are buying" means they are renting to own - the laptop is not their property yet. RAC = Rent-a-Center, otherwise known as Ream And Collect.

They're buying something from a company and it has junk on it already? Take it back... No, the customer is not always right. I've walked away from work when I was asked to do something that was illegal, unethical, or just plain stupid. Obviously, even if it's just family, "The customer is always Right" is the way to go. All you can do is warn them that it may not be 100% clean. I don't use SpyBot anymore, so I can't comment about Win7 compatibilities, since Vista had UAC, I'd imagine that it would work that way, but I've seen more trouble with apps that worked under Vista not working under Win7, than apps working on XP not working on Win7. In general, when working with an unknown system, nuking and repaving is much faster than trying to clean out malware and then being unsure that you got it all. Is it a pain? Sure, but so is being without a computer for several hours/days and then having a nagging feeling at the back of my mind that I'm giving them a less than optimal system. Also, garage clients and friends get the, don't run as admin speech and if I nuke and repave, they get two different accounts... I cleaned my brother-in-law's laptop and tried to add the SpyBot Hosts file, but was unable to do so from within SpyBot. Eventually I just put the Hosts file from my wife's XP box on a flash drive and copied it over, but I am trying to get ready for Windows 7 here in the office and thought I'd ask. I *did*, at least, know enough to try running SpyBot as an admin, but that still didn't allow me to add the Hosts file. :( I'm suspicious, especially after reading a thread on the SpyBot S&D forums, that there may still be a trace of what was infecting his computer lingering around. I've already run VipreRescue and MalwareBytes, but wanted to add the SpyBot Hosts file as an added precaution.
