No, it doesn't need to be an actual Cisco client.

I'd like to suggest another option: the native L2TP/IPsec client that's
built into (or available for) virtually all 32-bit & 64-bit editions of
Windows - everything from Windows 98 to the latest Windows 7.

Your ASA will need some reconfiguration to work with it, however.
