I believe it was Office 2007 that started the PDF integration. Microsoft had it included in Office 2007 betas, Adobe whimpered, Microsoft took it out of RTM, but then release it as an add-on. Office 2010 does a great job at it - almost flawless, except for TOC bookmarks.
