I've thought about it, but not quite ready to make the jump. The boys are 3 & 5, so they won't be on the Internet quite yet, and even if they are, I'll be restricting their access via the hosts file and only explicitly allow sites that they want access to, such as starfall.com. For the most part they'll just running their educational games and the like.
I'm considering setting up an old PC as a router/content filter with Ubuntu or something similar before I really allow them on the Internet, and even then it will only be when we're all downstairs, and they won't be allowed to have the laptop in their room - it must remain downstairs. If my laptop weren't at home, I'd take a deeper look. However, why not just put Ubuntu on the computer for your kids. I just upgraded both of my kids to Ubuntu from Windows XP on their desktops and I'm not looking back. They love it and I don't have to worry so much about AV2010, 2011, 2012 and whatever other crap is out there getting on their computers.
