If I log on with an admin account, I see the root i: folder, and three
of the four shares. The DATA share is what I cannot see, but can map
to.

The odd thing is that in the Share and Storage Management utility it
appears to be configured identically to my other campus file server, and
there is no visibility issue with that server's share.

I didn't even realize this until recently, when my backup guy told me
about it. So it may have been setup this way since I created the share.
My goal was to prevent departments from seeing other departments
folders (data share has all department folders under it, each assigned
perms based on group). The root DATA share perms have the server's
local administrators group having full control, of which domain admins
is a member. UAC is enabled, so I'm guessing this might be the issue.
Not sure why.

If you use explorer and type in I:\Data, do you get there?

Sounds like it could be UAC related. If you’re not logged on with an
admin account on the server, you might not see it at all. If you are
logged on with an admin account, you are still going to get prompted to
elevate (not enough permissions w/out elevation) when you are able to
open the i:\data folder. If this is the problem, you could add a group
with read/modify permission that includes your admin account, but is not
one of the default “administrators” or “domain admins” groups.
Or, do you mean the folder has suddenly gained the hidden attribute,
which you should be able to see if you set your explorer view to show
all hidden items?

Subject: Folder permissions/attributes issue

Hi Folks,

I have several large file and print 2008 servers here. Each has an
"i:\" drive that has a number of shares under it such as APPS and DATA.
The DATA share is the problem on one of the servers. When I log into it,
I cannot see it under i:\. But I can map a drive just fine. The perms
are the same at the root of the drive and at the DATA share level:

Shareing | Advanced, enable access-based enumeration

Share permissions: everyone and administrators have full controle

NTFS permissions (inhereted permissions removed):
CO, , subfolders and files: full
Auth users, this folder, subfoler, files: traverse and list
SYSTEM, same as CO with this folder added
Administrators, same as SYSTEM

Under data we have folder for each department. For each folder I grant
the permissions to the departments' respective security groups.

I don't recall setting DATA to hidden. Suggestions on favorite tools
to dig into this?

Tom
