You should be able to click on, "Add Joe Smith to your network" over on the
right hand side of Joe's public profile. Using myself as an example, here is my
public profile - you'll see "Add Jonathan L. Raper to your network" over on the
upper right corner. http://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanlraper

Then you'll have a new window entitled, "Invite Joe Smith to connect on
LinkedIn" with a list of radio button options. "Colleague" or "We've done
business together" should be sufficient, as it will allow you to choose the
entity for whom YOU worked at the time, giving Joe the frame of reference to
jog his memory. It matters not whether he lists or even ever worked for one of
those entities. If he doesn't want to connect, all he has to do is ignore the
request and it sits in the equivalent of what is referred to as purgatory on
Facebook. I've had connection requests go for months unanswered, only to get a
"you're now connected" message later - either they don't use LinkedIn much, or
they weren't sure they remembered me...

I've rambled enough. Hope you find this helpful.

Where is the friend option? This guy doesn't list our past company so there is
no association.

I have added people out of my network to join my network. I selected the
“Friend” option and provided details to make sure they knew who I was. I have
probably done this for around 10 people this week since going solo on the job
front. Have had no issues whatsoever and I am using the free LinkedIn account.
Hope this helps you.

Subject: OT: Did LinkedIn change?

Hey Folks,

It's been a while since I was on LinkedIn. Yesterday I was looking for a past
colleague, found him, but could not send him an invite as this person was "out
of network". I was able to join another past colleague since we had someone in
common as part of our network.

I was able to send the past colleague a message, if I signed-up for at
$24/month "upgrade". Since I don't use LinkedIn except for occasional
professional contacts, it's hardly worth it.

I thought when I first signed up with LinkedIn I could invite anyone to be part
of my network. Maybe I'm wrong and missing something. But since I can't just
invite anyone, anymore, like Face Book, why bother? Maybe $24 a year, but a
month?

If I'm mistaken please show me the light...

Tom
