Like you said with IPX hanging around. I think IPV4 will last for much longer than IPX did. A) like you said all the legacy devices, B) eventually when you can't get anything but a v6 public facing address won't you just let your v6 capable router/firewall do the address translation for you. You won't need to be on v6 internal to get to the public net. And the talk about selling off v4 address's. If it is actually legal and there is a structure to do so, I don't know. It's not like a domain name is it? But lets say it happens, there's some good incentive for owners of large blocks to convert to v6, sell their v4 and that in turn frees up more v4 address's. That would potentially free up v4 for a long time to come. You think about all the ISP's out there that have a huge investment in customer equipment that can't support v6. The doc covers Cisco routers excellently (being from Cisco, one would expect this), and does a fair job with many of the concepts. But I expect the real challenges with IPv6 will not be getting a router that works. Or configuring the common OSes. The real trouble will be the legions of embedded systems which are IPv4 only, the applications which fall apart when anything changes, and the misconfigured networks one wants to route to/though. I envision many shops will end up with desktops running IPv6 to get to the public net, with a fleet of IPv-4-only equipment and apps within the organization.
