Most any NAT router includes a stateful firewall and even so, it won't let
anything in unless you *choose* to forward the ports to a particular
machine. So the machine cannot be attacked from outside except with help
from the inside. Check your protection at
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 (if URL doesn't work, www.grc.com and
look for ShieldsUp!).

And where does that help from the inside come from? A PEBKAC is frequently
enough, but combine that with the numerous unpatched Windows vulnerabilities
in Windows 2000, and it's going to be attacked with or without a software
firewall. The only thing a software firewall can do is announce that the
machine is compromised and possibly (but often not) prevent information
leakage back to the perpetrator.

Hi
The machine is behind a router
However it has been the victim of an attack, the router offers only
minimal support (port blocking)

Thanks

Is the machine behind a hardware firewall (a.k.a. "SOHO router" or
better) or connected directly to the Internet?

If you said "there's a hardware firewall", then what are you looking to
protect against that the hardware firewall hasn't already covered?
