Most any NAT router includes a stateful firewall and even so, it won't let anything in unless you *choose* to forward the ports to a particular machine. So the machine cannot be attacked from outside except with help from the inside. Check your protection at https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 (if URL doesn't work, www.grc.com and look for ShieldsUp!).
And where does that help from the inside come from? A PEBKAC is frequently enough, but combine that with the numerous unpatched Windows vulnerabilities in Windows 2000, and it's going to be attacked with or without a software firewall. The only thing a software firewall can do is announce that the machine is compromised and possibly (but often not) prevent information leakage back to the perpetrator. "SOHO router" or better) or connected directly to the Internet? If you said "there's a hardware firewall", then what are you looking to protect against that the hardware firewall hasn't already covered?
