Hey List, I have what I hope to be an easy one here: Windows XP had the behavior where I could as a domain admin connect to a remote computer's printer share and add/delete printers. This was an extremely useful tool for managing printers without logging users out.
Vista and Windows 7 have a different behavior... they allow you to access the share but not to make changes. It says I don't have permission. The printers don't even show up in this case. So, I dug a little, searched a lot, and figured out that if you turn on the "Pubic folder sharing" option under 'Network and Sharing Center' -> 'Advanced sharing settings' (Windows 7 in this case, might be different in Vista)... it works. Two questions: 1. Is there a group policy I can set to turn this on across all our desktops? 2. Is turning this on for my connivence a bad idea, security wise? It doesn't specify in the tooltip that EVERYONE will have read/write access to public folders, but it kinda implies it. Thanks for all your help guys, this list is invaluable. --Matt Ross Ephrata School District ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ <http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/> ~ --- To manage subscriptions click here: http://lyris.sunbelt-software.com/read/my_forums/ or send an email to [email protected] with the body: unsubscribe ntsysadmin
