Can't see the hardware... does that mean he can't see the drive to install? Controller drivers seem possible.
I've had pesky drives that windows fails to deal with in any kind of sane manner respond much better after I boot from a live CD of linux and 'dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX' (where sdX == the drive you want to erase) for a few seconds. Doing this writes zeros to the drive, of course... which usually cleans off any partition crud written to the begining of the drive, and then restart the windows install and let it see a drive with no partitions.
