I've figured out another way around this.  We just had a similar problem with 
Pro-E and they don't "officially" support license server communication over 
VPN/WAN links.  The tech agreed with me that they had better get with the times 
because engineers can't be tethered with GB connections all the time.  And that 
they are unofficially working on fixing the timeout problem.
In our setup I've had users connected up with the Cisco Software VPN client and 
it always worked great.  We finally got a hardware VPN set up to those users 
between out ASA's and that's when they timed out to the license server.  In our 
case there's no DNS resolution between the networks so I had the license server 
configured by IP.  I could ping the ip and had sub 130ms ping times but 
wouldn't work.  Took a stab in the dark and added the license server to the 
workstations hosts file, changed the config to point to server name and it 
fires right up with no problems whatsoever.
