Rooting also depends on your tinkering level, how necessary is your phone on your daily life. I have a nexus one running the custom Cyanogen Rom. Rooting is medium complex but once you get it, the whole world opens. I can now Tether my ipad on tmobile w/o paying extra, loaded better VPN modules, can run a full backup/restore of the phone, Skin the phone, added an IP camera App. Etc...
But always be cautious that you can ruin your phone, rare but it happens.
