+1. Never seen a 2.5" not fire up over USB.

The double-plug USB cables are a hack that happens to work sometimes -- maybe even most of the time -- but sometimes it doesn't. And when it doesn't, you can't do anything about it, since it wasn't "supposed" to work in the first place.
