Thanks. Didn't manage to get by the Batteries Plus store this weekend, but I might be able to later on this week or next weekend. I just hate to chuck a decent UPS just 'cause it's got a dead battery. :-)

Contrary to what some other list members have been saying, most APC Smart-UPS units will *not* start without a good battery circuit. http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9222/kw/batteries/session/L3Rp bWUvMTMwMTY5Nzk3OC9zaWQvcFV5TG1xcWs%3D The battery has to be connected and it has to be good enough to allow some current through. I'm told a severely degraded battery of the type used by APC will not pass any current, and thus prevent the unit from starting. So if you've got an old APC UPS that won't start, a likely cause is a worn-out battery. Other possible causes include: Tripped circuit breaker. Loose battery connection. Blown fuse. Some units put a fuse in the battery circuit, often on the battery pack itself. Some put fuses on the control electronics PCB. You may have to disassemble the unit entirely to check. Watch those capacitors, they can still contain dangerous power even with battery and line disconnected. Damaged electronics. All Smart-UPS units are microprocessor controlled. There are also high-voltage electronics used for power switching, regulation, etc. If any of that is damaged, the UPS may not start. This is prolly the least-common problem, but it can happen. -- Ben ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ <http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/> ~ --- To manage subscriptions click here: http://lyris.sunbelt-software.com/read/my_forums/ or send an email to [email protected] with the body: unsubscribe ntsysadmin ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ <http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/> ~ --- To manage subscriptions click here: http://lyris.sunbelt-software.com/read/my_forums/ or send an email to [email protected] with the body: unsubscribe ntsysadmin
