Wow.  My experience has been the complete opposite across the board.  I
never used the old Windows search b/c it was a dog on every machine I put it
on.  I always wound up removing it.  The search baked in to 7 is awesome,
particularly when searching Outlook.

What are you searching for?  Files?  File content?  Email?
