Overkill? No. A single site server can support 10's of thousands. However, you'll want to review the architecture docs for planning the implementation. You'll also want to get intimately comfortable with the important acronyms like BDP, DP, etc., etc. and how they work. Planning the right architecture is the key to a successful ConfigMgr implementation, particularly if you want Internet connected clients, or if clients connect across multiple speed links, etc.
3rd party Support is also key to a successful implementation. I'd suggest, even if you never participate, subscribing to the SCCM email discussion list.
