I really like what I see coming in SCVMM 2012. In fact I think the
whole system center group is doing a great job. Right now I am working
on a portal for hosting and interfacing workflows with SSSM. I am very
impressed in how easy the product can be customized. If I was to use
SCVMM to deploy new servers I would still need to use SSCM to patch them
correct?

Cheers
Ryan

Most of the guidance that MSFT provides is based on desktop deployments.
So it probably seems like that that is all that people do.

But servers can be handled in exactly the same way, and large companies
have been using tools like SCCM for server deployments for a long time.

At one point, to become a premier hosting partner with MSFT, you HAD to
have an automated mechanism for deploying servers. It's probably the
same today.

Me personally - I wouldn't deploy more than a couple of servers by hand
anymore. I want automation to get it right and let me move on to doing
real work. For physical servers that's SCCM. (You can do virtual
deployments with SCCM too - that's what I do in my lab - but IMO SCVMM
is easier for that purpose - if you have the infrastructure built to
support SCVMM.)

I always see the focus on SCCM seems to be on desktops. Is it not as
common to use it to manage servers?

Overkill? No. A single site server can support 10's of thousands.
However, you'll want to review the architecture docs for planning the
implementation. You'll also want to get intimately comfortable with the
important acronyms like BDP, DP, etc., etc. and how they work. Planning
the right architecture is the key to a successful ConfigMgr
implementation, particularly if you want Internet connected clients, or
if clients connect across multiple speed links, etc.

3rd party Support is also key to a successful implementation. I'd
suggest, even if you never participate, subscribing to the SCCM email
discussion list. The valuable info that flows through there is
enormous. Be forewarned that the list is just as active as this one.

Good question. Would I want to support every workstation in the
district?
(Aka, about 500 windows machines...) Or would that be overkill for a
single server?
