Brian & Michael

Thanks for your tips. Configuring the Cisco switches and VMware vSwitches as
described in the links made the job. NLB is now working.

You have to burn the NLB MAC/ARP entry into the switches with Cisco. Here is
the doc -
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_configuration_example09186a0080a07203.shtml.
There’s also a checkbox on the properties of the vSwitch in VMWare you have to
check. I don’t recall the name offhand, though.

Thanks,

Hi Michael

I got the details from my collegue:

Specs:

• Exchange Server 2010

• All Servers installed on VMware ESX 4.1

• 2x Mailbox Server Role in a DAG Cluster

• 2x CAS/HT Server Role in an NLB Cluster

• 1 of each are on an ESX Server in Data Center 1 and the other ones in
Data Center 2

• The Data Centers are connected with a Layer 2 Fibre Optic Gigabit
Link, Distance approx. 300m

• Switches: a Cisco 4500 in DC1 and a Cisco 3750 in DC2, connected with
an Etherchannel and HSRP

• Clients are on a different subnet, the Cisco 4500 and 3750 are Layer
3 Switches

Imagine left DC1 and right DC2:

Exchange NLB Setup:
http://howtoexchange.wordpress.com/2009/12/16/configuring-client-access-array-for-exchange-2010-walkthrough/

Cisco Info:
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1006525

How do we need to configure the Cisco switches for NLB to work right?
And It doesn’t converge at all. I got some hints why in the meantime, working
on it, don’t know yet if that’s the solution.

Thank you for your help.
Patrick

And what does the OP mean, specifically, by “having some problems”?

Well NLB isn’t very smart. I would expect it to take a bit of time for things
to converge. Does it ever converge (e.g. if you turn off one server, does it
eventually start working)?

Thanks,

Subject: FW: Exchange 2010 DAG Cluster with HT/CAS on NLB

Hi everybody

We’re currently implementing a setup of 4 Exchange 2010 Servers with 2 MBX and
2 HT/CAS Servers. Unfortunately, we’re having some problems getting the NLB to
work right. Whenever one server of the CAS Array reboots, the other doesn’t
take over it’s functionality.

Has anyone configured such an installation so far? What was your experience and
how did you get it to work?

Thank you for your help.
