You can do everything you need to do from one place. You can choose whether 
that is local (i.e., customer premise) or remote (i.e., Office 365 console or 
Office 365 PowerShell cmdlets).

Office 365 uses standard and well-known (well, to enterprises anyway) 
facilities - ADFS or FIM. BPOS uses something they hacked together quickly (not 
to say that it isn't decent for what it does - it is - but it isn't a complete 
solution).

Even at best, with BPOS, quite a few functions have to be duplicated in both 
places. Also, the total amount of control that you have in BPOS is 
significantly limited when compared to Office 365.

And finally - you are going to be moved to Office 365 within 18 months 
regardless. Why go through two migrations?
