I'm back again, had the time to try what you suggested and these are
the results:

yes, it does. with the BootX control panel the kernel boots faster;
with the Bootx extension I get the same garbled and coloured screen I
mentioned in a previous mail and after about two minutes the kernel
boots.

not sure what kind of information you mean but I get some information.

I tried to use BootX 1.2.2 (both the extension and the control panel)
but the machine hangs with a Type 10 error.
the last debug lines I see are:
Initing MacOS Toolbox...
Initing BootX...
Looking up valid kernels...
