I also thought of trying to get sound working on the PowerBooks.
And there have been requests for a driver every once in a while on this
list.

The sound CODEC chip that is used in the NuBus PowerBooks (500, 2300,
1400, 5300) is an ITT ASCO and I got the documentation for it.
The same CODEC is used in PDS the PowerMacs (x100) but the interface is
different.
While the PDS PowerMacs use DMA the PowerBooks use something like a
hardware buffer - at least that's what the Apple hardware notes say.
I suppose well working sound drivers can be quite difficult to write -
especially if one never has done something like that before.
A DMA emulation driver could be the thing we need - we could use the
PDM driver then.

But porting to kernel 2.6 needs to be done before writing a sound
driver I think.
