Hi Teejay,
 
the only really reliable way to boot a 1400 from CD (at least using the
internal drive) is the following one:
1) Power down.
2) Keep the mouse/trackpad button pressed after powering up.
3) Wait until the hard disk drive motor is switched off again.
4) Release the mouse/trackpad button.
5) Keep the "C" key pressed until the system starts from the CD.
 
That procedure has never failed for me nor anyone else while all the other
methods fail from time to time.
