The biggest problem I had with installing Gentoo was that with 64 MB of
RAM, there was a lot of thrashing during compiles because of the heavy
need for swap.

I've pondered different ways to hack more than 64 MB of RAM into the
system, and reached the following conclusions:
-The system cannot address more than 64 MB of RAM due to bus
limitations.
-As a result, trying to address more than 64 MB would require some type
of hardware multiplexer or switch that would alternate between two or
more 64 MB address spaces.
-If this were possible, there would also need to be a software component
at the kernel level which would somehow need to communicate with the
multiplexer/switch on when to switch address spaces.
-In order to remain compatible with the existing system architecture,
the software would have to communicate with the multiplexer in some
basic way (i.e. write a particular value at a specific address, or
similar).

It'd be a nifty hobby project, but I'm not entirely sure how I'd do it.
The software side seems feasible, but the hardware side is a bit iffy.

Thanks.. Nah, I'm going to wait until I pick up a 466MHz G3 mod for it
before I go compiling my own system (along with something bigger than
a 750MB hd). I have Debian 3.1 (Guess that's Etch) on there right now
and it runs pretty good. Gentoo will get there eventually, but I'm
curious to see if they can manage to get a working 2.6.x kernel
soonish.
