Nuclear power ...
- ... has been oversold before.
- First time around, nuclear power was going to guarantee a fairy-tale
future.
- The mind-set created by that unrealistic dream led to profligate use
of energy - and most of it has been carbon-based.
- Nuclear mythology is deeply implicated in the phenomenon of global
warming.
It is not something apart.
- This time nuclear power is supposed to save the world.
Another
unrealistic dream? This time, the deception is deliberate and
calculated.
- It could cost the Earth
- The short history of nuclear power has been characterised by
deception
... cannot be an answer to global warming.
- It is not acceptable to substitute one
unresolved toxic legacy (nuclear waste) in order to avoid another
(accumulation of greenhouse gasses).
- There will never be, even in the most
extreme scenario, sufficient nuclear power to make a real impact on
global warming.
At best it can represent a small
contribution. The size of the contribution does not warrant the risks
attached.
... will consume investment that could be
employed in developing sustainable technologies and energy efficiency.
... is outdated.
- Centralised generation belongs in the
past
- The future is
distributed.
... is inflexible.
- It has to be generated where the
cooling-water is
- Not where the customers are.
- Transmission is wasteful and
expensive.
